1.What has roots that nobody sees
is taller than the trees
up, up, it grows
and yet no one knows?
2.Thirty white horses on a red hill
First they clamp
Then they stamp
then they stand still.
3.Voiceless it cries,
Wingless it flutters,
Toothless it bites,
Mouthless it mutters.
4.It can't be seen, can't be felt,
can't be heard, can't be smelt.
It lies behind the stars and under hills,
and empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
5.A box without hinges, key, or lid
yet a golden treasure is hidden within.
6.Alive without breath,
as cold without death,
Never thirsty, ever drinking
all in mail never clinking.
7.This thing all things devours,
birds, beasts, trees, flowers
gnaws iron, bites steel
grinds hard stones to meal
slays kings, ruins towns.
